Ultimate Magic Tour: Tour Journal September 15, 2011

September 15, 2011- Detroit International Airport

I haven’t written recently so let me bring you up to speed.  The tour is going shockingly well.  I have been using a new set list and a few new pieces since the spring tour and everything is working well together.  There is a fine line to walk as a magician: too much intensity is alienating to an audience and too much comedy is a waste of a good magic show.  The idea is to give them something real but wrap it up in a good time.  So far it’s working.

However, more so than maybe ever before, my brain actually feels broken.  This morning I struggled off of the first flight in search of coffee and a quiet place to sit and regroup.  Or, in the case of this morning, group for the first time.  I’m generally not very good at sleeping  when I know that a big day is ahead of me and last night was harder than usual.  The 3:30 AM wake up time was preceded by a 1:00 wake up, a 2:20 wake up, and a 3:19 wake up that effectively ended any hope for real rest.

All of this is to say that I am exhausted.  What’s more, the travel schedule is such that instead of heading back to the hotel to sleep after the show tonight I’ll only have time to shower and change my clothes before making the drive back to the airport for an early flight so I can make it to the next show tomorrow night.

However, I now have a two hour layover ahead of me and this is a mini-vacation of its own.  Coffee and some reading.  Also, for what it’s worth, I am ridiculously excited about the show tonight.  This is a tripple-header performance with two of my best friends.  The Nate Staniforth/Brian Brushwood/Daniel Martin Ultimate Magic Tour shows are always, always an amazing time.

Waking up now.  This is going to be a good show tonight.
